First Friday Art Online April 2025 exhibit is featuring artworks by western artist Clyde D. Lewis.
Raised in south Texas, the western lifestyle was first introduced to Mr Lewis through his uncle who worked as a cowboy on the Walker Ranch.
Showing interest in art at an early age, a cousin, who is a retired San Antonio police officer and artist for the SAPD, became his first art mentor and taught the youth basic drawing skills.
Dedicated to the cowboy way of life, Clyde has competed in rodeo events such as; team roping, steer wrestling, and bull riding. He worked cattle on the 3,000 acre family ranch, and he continues to volunteer his services at both the San Antonio and Houston Livestock Shows and Rodeos.
After completing some art classes, the cowboy and Native American culture remains an important inspiration for his artwork. Actually, its in his own DNA, as his grandfather was an African American & Choctaw Native American. Clyde enjoys spending much time researching historical events, period-correct tools, clothing, legends and lifestyles of various tribal Nations, as well as black cowboys and Buffalo Soldiers. Mr Lewis strives to help preserve and honor not only his own heritage, but also those who worked and lived on our western frontier, especially during the turbulent 1800's.
Clyde Lewis, a co-founding member of the Western Artist Roundup Association, exhibits his artworks in various Texas art shows.
Recently, Mr. Lewis was the lone black artist representing the western genre while participating in the 2025 Harlem Fine Arts Show (HFAS) held in midtown Manhattan, New York City. His displayed Native American ledger art and cowboy prints were a near sell-out at the successful, celebrity attended, East Coast event.
Residing in San Antonio, his art has been published in books, sold to collectors across the USA and in a couple foreign countries.
Artworks by Clyde Lewis will be featured in First Friday Art Online. This online exhibit opens Friday April 4th, at Western Galleries.
Western Galleries, an online art gallery based in Fredericksburg Texas, focuses on original artworks and prints created by select Texas artists.
Private in-person art preview meetings are also available by appointment.
