Western Galleries is pleased to present
renowned Texas artist Calvin Carter

Western and wildlife artist Calvin Carter | Western Galleries

Born in Hempstead TX., Calvin Carter has fond memories of spending time in the field with his father and grandfather as well as drawing and competing for the funniest or best drawing with his father, uncle, and grandfather.  Winning his first national art contest by the age of seventeen, his work was also discovered at a local fair by art patron Gib DeLisle, along with gallery owner Butch Kissman.  They encouraged and helped the teenager into a prominent college art program.
Calvin pursued his career under late professor Jerry Newman at Lamar University (LU) and received his Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Art.  For several years he continued figurative painting before returning to his first childhood love of wildlife art.
An avid outdoorsman, Carter has created numerous
Texas Parks & Wildlife Stamps & limited edition print series, Texas Upland Game Bird Stamp, and earned placings in the Federal Duck Stamp Contest.   His sporting & wildlife art is featured in current exhibitions and show catalogs at the Sportmans Galleries in Nashville TN & Charleston South Carolina.  Also exhibited in art galleries in Alabama and Texas.
A mutual friend introduced Calvin to two historians that specialize in the early to mid 1800’s history and preservation of Native American cultures. Through them, he discovered a new passion for honoring Native Americans and their history by creating art with period-correct tools, clothing, and details.
Calvin was also blessed to befriend Minoma Littlehawk and Daniel Long Soldiers.  They also taught Carter about their ancestral history, and the important aspects they are passionate about visually preserving for future generations.
Calvin and his family live in Bridge City, Texas.   He enjoys being a High School art teacher, spending time with his wife and six children, researching, outdoor photography, and playing guitar.  His mission is to promote continuing art education, wildlife conservation, and helping preserve our unique Western history through artwork.

A limited number of Calvin Carter's western and Native American original paintings will be featured and available for purchase in the First Friday Art Online exhibit.

The gallery opens on Friday, February 7th, at WesternGalleries.com.  Email subscribers receive an early invitational access on Thursday Feb 6th.
