About Rita Manygoats:
Diné - Navajo Nation, AZ.
Rita Manygoats (b: 1965- ), a notable Navajo potter, is the daughter of the famous Diné Potter, Betty Manygoats and continues to incorporate her mother's horned toad appliqué and traditional styles.
Betty Manygoats, aka Betty Barlow (b: 1945-), was taught traditional lifestyle pottery by her mother, Zonie Barlow, and Betty began creating her own horned toad pottery in the late 1970's to create something 'different'. Her work quickly began winning awards and is in many important collections including the Smithsonian.
Navajo pottery witnessed a revival in the 1950's with the Southwest tourism industry.
Navajo redware pottery is often done in a more traditional manner using clay from their Black Mesa, outdoor firing using cedar wood, sheep or cattle dung, and piñon pitch (brown) to help seal the pottery.
