20th ANNIVERSARY - LIMITED TIME 20% OFF
"We were thrilled to receive permission from the family hosting this private traditional Girl's Coming Of Age Ceremony on the Mescalero Apache Reservation. What an honor to be able to witness & photograph a small part of their sacred traditional way of life!"
The various events lasts about 5 days/nights and tests the young girl's endurance & skills. Included are many day & night songs, prayers, blessings from elders, medicine men & women, and dancers. The people also gather under the main lodge that serves as a large dining hall, with daily feasting for all. In all, the ceremony lasts well over a week including setting-up and breaking down all lodges.
The US government had outlawed events like this in the late 1880's, but with the 1978 Religious Freedom Act, ceremonies were finally legalized.
