NOTES FROM ARTIST:
The peacock feathers in the bonnet were inspired by a Kiowa ledger drawing found in the Smithsonian collection. The eagle feathers are dyed with yellow ochre in the crown of the war bonnet, with peacock feathers attached to eagle feathers. Peacocks were imported to the United States around 1870's, especially in California & the west coast. Many of the traders brought feathers through the southern plains going to the northern part of the country. Some Native Americans would trade for them, including tribes such as Pawnee, Osage, and Kiowa.
The historical red circle painted on the face is rarely depicted in western artwork. Red & black were often used in period of war.
